SYDNI (Sydenham Neighbourhood Initiatives), a Leamington Spa-based charity, has been awarded £10,000 by the VINCI UK Foundation to invest in upgrading its facilities.

The Foundation is supported by VINCI Energies and some of its employees will volunteer their time to help work on the project.

SYDNI applied for funding from the VINCI UK Foundation to redesign and renovate the SYDNI Centre’s kitchen and café, which are at the heart of this social space dedicated to the Sydenham Estate. The redesign will create more work and storage space in the kitchen, allowing better learning opportunities for volunteers, and better supporting the charity in its future vision. The new space will also be used to introduce new food-related volunteer projects such as teaching people how to make nutritional meals. This will help to further expand on the opportunities offered by this pioneering community cohesion charity, which also provides facilities for information, recreation, sport, education and leisure to local residents.

The VINCI UK Foundation, funded by VINCI businesses across the UK, supports groups and charities which work to tackle exclusion, foster community integration and improve access to employment and housing. Launched in early 2016, the Foundation is unique in its support for good causes due to its specific focus and provision of skilled volunteers.

SYDNI is a fantastic charity and social centre, doing exactly the kind of work we set up the VINCI UK Foundation to support. Sydenham is a diverse part of Leamington Spa, where residents come from many different countries and backgrounds, so SYDNI offers an excellent service in helping to bring the community together. I’ve seen the impact of its work first hand, and am delighted that we have been able to support SYDNI through the VINCI UK Foundation

Rochdi Ziyat CEO, VINCI Energies UK & RoI

SYDNI was set up to address the issues particular to Sydenham, and offer local residents their own community opportunities. The Centre provides facilities which cover a large range of needs for our diverse community, ranging from sporting facilities to educational and information access. This generous donation from the VINCI UK Foundation is hugely important in helping us to upgrade our kitchen and café facilities, which are at the heart of the Centre and our work. With these upgrades we will be able to offer more services to residents, including cookery lessons, and to provide an even better environment for our residents and volunteers.

The SYDNI Centre is in the heart of the Sydenham Estate in Leamington Spa.
Sydenham Neighbourhood Initiatives, or SYDNI for short, is a community-based initiative and was set up to address the issues particular to Sydenham, an estate with a population of approximately 5,000 residents. The residents are from many different countries each with a much loved cultural background and language; includes Asian, Portuguese and Polish Communities.
SYDNI was created by local residents to offer their own community opportunities and support. The SYDNI Centre provides facilities for information, recreation, sport, education and leisure. SYDNI provides a warm and welcoming environment free from the prejudice that celebrates
diversity; whether you are coming to our community centre to have a coffee in SYDNI Café, joining in one of our projects or coming for corporate training.
Sydenham Neighbourhood Initiatives strive to respond to community need and to empower local residents in local decision making and in the future of our projects and facilities. Volunteers are essential to the operation and development of SYDNI’s services.
