Incredible Careers with VEUK: Alana, Trainee Design Engineer with Omexom UK

Ever wondered what it's like to work at a VINCI Energies business? We spoke to some of our colleagues to find out about their experiences.

As part of a series on the Incredible people working with VINCI Energies Businesses, we asked some of our colleagues to tell us why they enjoy working with us and how they have been supported by their teams. In the first of these interviews, we spoke to Alana Jackson, Trainee Design Engineer with Omexom UK.

Hi Alana, Can you finish the following sentance: ‘My business is an incredible company to work for because…’

It’s an incredible company to work for because I am encouraged and mentored to achieve my full potential. I also work with professionals that I learn from and support me throughout my career development.

Give us an example of a time where you have been supported to achieve your best in your career with us.

I began working for Omexom in 2010 as a Document Controller and due to having AutoCAD experience in my previous career in the Construction Industry, I moved into the role as an AutoCAD Technician. Over time I developed an interest in learning Interface Design and due to support from my manager through mentoring and attending design related courses, I am currently training to be a Design Engineer.

VEUK is an organisation made up of Incredible Teams both large and small. Tell us about your Incredible Team and what it’s like to work with them.

I feel so fortunate to be part of the Engineering Business Unit team and work with a great group of people who are always there to offer help and support if needed. We work over two offices and have weekly team meetings so discuss issues, workload, business unit updates and general catch up with the team member we don’t see every day. Everyone works well together and we enjoy each other’s company both inside and outside of the office.

At VEUK and our associated Businesses, we are ‘Transforming our World Through the Digital and Energy Revolutions’. Please tell us how you (or your team) is helping us to achieve that goal

We are currently working on a number of digital protection solution projects that implements IEC 61820 protocol. IEC 61820 uses a fibre optic cables which minimises the use of copper cables therefore improving communication as the fibre optic cables aren’t susceptible to magnetic interference. Communication is physically faster than using traditional methods which helps network security.

Finally, can you tell us in a few words why you are proud to do what you do

Coming from the Construction Industry, when I joined Omexom I had no Electrical Design knowledge. Due to the desire to learn more about Electrical Design and working alongside Engineers I am proud of my new role as a Trainee Design Engineer and hope to continually learn and progress as an Engineer. Also, as someone who cares greatly about the environment, I’m proud to work for a company that is committed to drastically reduce CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste as well as protect natural habitats.

Alana’s story isn’t unique at VINCI Energies UK. We have people working in a wide range of careers that are making a difference to the world they live in every day.
